RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw University men's and women's cross-country team is set to begin the 2019 season Friday, Aug. 30 as the Bears and Lady Bears travel to Elon, NC to compete in the annual Elon XC Opener. The meet will begin at 8:15 p.m. with the women's 4K followed by the men's 6K at 8:40 p.m. at the Elon Cross Country Course.
About the Bears
The Bears have four runners returning and one newcomer for the 2019 season. Top returner Torotich Kiplagat (Elderet, Kenya) who was recently named one of the top five "Runners to Watch" by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) will lead the Bears in this year's campaign after coming off a fourth-place finish individually in the 2018 CIAA championship. The Bears squad is comprised of three sophomores, one freshman and Kiplagat being the elder's men as the lone junior.
About the Lady Bears
The Lady Bears are slated to field a nine-competitor lineup in its first race of the season with two runners making their collegiate debuts. The remaining of the roster is made up of three sophomores and four juniors. The women's squad who finished ninth overall at the 2018 CIAA championships returns All-CIAA selection senior Kaydi-Ann Wint (Kingston, Jamaica) who finished 12th overall, earning her second consecutive All-CIAA selection. Sophomore Luisa Cury (Araraquara, Brazil) will also look to the Lady Bears this season coming off a strong showing in the championship, missing the All-CIAA selections by just three seconds.
Head coach Frantz Smith enters his second season at the helm leads both men's and women's cross-country, assisted by Kevin Howell, Sr.
