WILSON, N.C.  – The Shaw University men's and women's cross country teams completed its 2016 debut at the Bulldog Cross Country Invitational on Friday evening hosted by Barton College. The Bears placed sixth out of nine teams in the 8k race with 184 points, while the Lady Bears finished eighth out of nine teams with 236 points in the 5k race.

Sophomore DayQuan Champman (Winterville, NC) paced the Bears with a time of 31:21.72 good for 26th overall. Newcomer Mauricio Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico) placed 34th (32:05.73), and freshman Isiah Gaddy (Norwalk, CT) placed 50th (35:35.20). Barton's Joel Lagat placed first overall with a time of 26:41.05, while Louisburg College had three runners place second, third and fourth, respectively. The Hurricanes won the men's 8k race with 21 points overall as Francis Marion (62 points) and Pfeiffer (90 points) finished second and third.  

On the women's side, junior Briona May (Hampton, VA) led the pack for the Lady Bears as she finished 32nd overall with a time of 24:16.79. Senior Muriel Evans (Sumter, SC) placed 54th, while sophomore Kyla Sanders (Hampton, VA), junior Tearra Arrington (Newport News, VA) and freshman Jhetame Lacan (Charlotte, NC) crossed the line 60th, 61st, and 62nd overall. Sharon Kiptoo of Barton won the women's 5k race with a time of 20:22.66, while Pheiffer's Kylie Spencer and Stephany Sislava of Louisburg College placed second and third, respectively.

Pfeiffer finished the race with 41 points for first place overall, while Winston-Salem State (75 points) and Barton (80 points) tabbed second and third.

Shaw will return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 in the Adidas XC Challenge in Cary, NC.
