RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team defeated Livingstone College for its sixth-straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) victory in a row and 11th conference win on the season as the Lady Bears earned a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-14) sweep of the Lady Blue Bears Wednesday night inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The win improves Shaw to 11-8 overall, 11-1 in CIAA action and 6-1 in the Southern Division. Livingstone dips to 10-6 overall, 6-5 in league action and 4-3 in the South.
Senior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) led the way with 12 kills and six digs while senior Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) chipped in nine kills and six stops. Sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) handed out 27 assists for Shaw with graduate senior Emma Celentano (Raleigh, NC) picking up eight digs and four service aces – both team highs.
The first set was equal for most of the first set until Shaw scored five unanswered points to take a 19-15 lead. The Lady Bears then cooked up a 6-2 run to take a 25-17 set and 1-0 lead.
Shaw opened the second stanza with a 13-8 lead and although Livingstone closed the gap to two points on several occasions, the Lady Bears mounted an 8-0 run to go ahead by double digits before closing out the set win with a kill from senior Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) for the 25-20 set win and 2-0 advantage.
In the third set, the Lady Bears got off to a 9-3 lead capped off by a block from Fletcher before building on that lead orchestrated by a 7-3 spurt in route to a 25-14 set win and 3-0 sweep.
Shaw will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Johnson C. Smith for a division contest at 6 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C.
