BOWIE, Md. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team swept Elizabeth City State University, 3-0 in Bowie, Md. during the opening day of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up #2 Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bears won by set scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-17.
Shaw improves to 9-8 overall on the season and 9-1 in the CIAA while ECSU falls to 5-11 on the year and 3-5 in the league play.
Senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) paced the Lady Bears with 17 kills and seven digs while senior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) added 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) contributed 37 assists and seven digs while senior Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) tallied 14 digs and nine kills. Senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) finished with 11 stops to wrap up the defensive highlights for Shaw.
In the opening set, Shaw trailed the Lady Vikings 12-6 before battling back by producing a 12-1 run to take a 17-13 lead. The Lady Bears then reeled off four of the sets final six points for the 25-21 win.
Shaw clung to a 23-22 lead in the second set after an attack error from ECSU. The Lady Bears scored its final two points on a kill from Sosa and Butler for the 2-0 lead in the match.
In back-and-forth effort during the third stanza, a kill from Hunter gave Shaw a one-point edge that led to a 7-4 frame and 16-14 lead for the Lady Bears midway. After a 7-4 spread, Shaw scored the final four points to take a 25-17 win and 3-0 sweep.
Shaw will conclude the round-up with an 11 a.m. match with Bowie State on Sunday (Oct. 20).
