ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Winning its second-consecutive road match in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play, the Shaw University women's volleyball team posted a 25-13, 25-17, 25-9 sweep over Claflin University (4-9, 3-5 CIAA) on Wednesday night in Tullis Arena.


The Lady Bears tallied 42 kills, 50 digs, 36 assists and six blocks on the night led by seniors Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) and Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) who both finished with a team-high 10 kills. Sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) added 32 assists and eight digs while senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) charted 16 digs and six kills. Senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) contributed 13 stops and four service aces. Also, Butler and Sosa both finished with service aces apiece.


Shaw opened the first set with a 4-1 lead before taking an 8-2 lead in route to a double digit lead and eventually the set win.


The Lady Bears scored the first five points in the second set to lead 5-0 over Claflin. Shaw maintained control throughout the stanza as the Lady Panthers would not get any closer than seven points down the stretch. A kill from Sosa and an attack error from Claflin provided Shaw with the set win and 2-0 lead in the match.


Similar to the first set, the Lady Bears raced out to a 4-1 lead highlighted by a kills from Hunter and Butler. Claflin closed the gap to two points on a service error from Shaw but another kill from Butler provided a 7-4 stand that led to an 11-3 scoring margin for the Lady Bears. From there, Shaw's defense held the Lady Panthers to two points as the Lady Bears scored five unanswered points to route Claflin for the 3-0 sweep.


The Lady Bears posted a .243 hitting percentage for the match, including a .387 mark in the third set.


Shaw will continue road play when the Lady Bears travel to Bowie, Md. to compete in the season's final CIAA Round-Up hosted by Bowie State. Shaw will face Elizabeth City State and Bowie State on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20. Game times and a complete schedule can be found on
