RALEIGH, N.C. – Hoping to extend its win-streak to seven-straight, the Shaw University women's volleyball team will pay a visit to division foe, Winston-Salem State University on Thursday (Oct. 10) for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division matchup at 6 p.m.
The Lady Bears enter Thursday's match with winning six of its last seven matches, including a 5-0 record during last week's events where Shaw posted a 3-0 record against Northern Division opponents at the CIAA Round-Up at Virginia State. The Lady Bears swept Lincoln (Pa), 3-0, following a 3-1 win against Virginia Union and a 3-2 victory against VSU.
Senior outside hitter Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) leads the way for Shaw with 111 kills while senior outside hitter/middle blocker Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) adds 93 total kills. Sophomore setter Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) owns 341 assists while senior outside hitter Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) collects 117 digs.
Also riding a win-streak of five games, the Rams are 7-5 overall and 4-1 in league action after competing in the CIAA round-up in Orangeburg, S.C. WSSU defeated both Elizabeth City State and Bowie State, 3-0. Ytae Cobb is the team's offensive leader with 99 kills while Rylee Wilson has 333 assists and Myra Wallace posts 144 digs.
Shaw has won the last three meetings against the Rams dating back to 2018. The last meeting between the two squads occurred during the semifinal of the conference championship run where the Lady Bears earned a 3-0 sweep on its way to its fourth straight championship appearance and second CIAA championship in four seasons.
The last time WSSU defeated Shaw was in 2017 during the CIAA championship on Nov. 19 in Ettrick, Va.
