ETTRICK, VA – Highlighted by a season-high 21 service aces and three players registering eight kills, the Shaw University women's volleyball team topped Lincoln (Pa.) University, 3-0 during the opening day of the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at the VSU Multipurpose Center Saturday night.
The Lady Bears defeated LUPA in straight sets by the scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-11. The win improves Shaw's overall record to 4-7 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA while Lincoln (Pa.) drops to 0-8 and 0-3 league play.
Seniors Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ), Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) and Amari Fletcher (Phoneix, AZ) all collected a team-high eight kills while sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) garnered 28 assists. Senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) collected a team-best six digs while seven of the Lady Bears recorded at least one dig.
Additionally, Sosa led the team in service aces with a career-high of eight while Butler also charted a season-high of seven in the winning effort. The Lady Bears owned a hitting percentage of .365 while holding the Lady Lions to -.045 on the night.
Shaw will return to the courts Sunday (Oct. 6) with two matches, beginning at 12 noon against Virginia Union, followed by the round-up finale against Virginia State at 2 p.m.
