RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team is set to participate in this weekend's Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up hosted by Virginia State University, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 5 through Sunday, Oct. 6 at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
The Lady Bears are scheduled to play Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday at 7 p.m., followed by two matches on Sunday against Virginia Union at 12 noon before its round-up finale with VSU at 2 p.m.
Shaw is 3-7 overall and 3-0 in the CIAA. The Lady Bears are fresh off a 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-14) sweep of Claflin (Wednesday, Oct. 2), in which there were six players that tallied a kill or more and eight players that charted at least one dig in the winning effort. Shaw dominated the Lady Panthers in nearly all facets, highlighted by a .410 hitting percentage.
Senior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) is the team's offensive leader with 77 kills while sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) has 231 assists – a team high and senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) has collected 89 digs defensively.
Lincoln (Pa) is 0-7 overall and 0-1 in league action while VUU is 1-7 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA. VSU is 5-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Last season, Shaw defeated the Lady Lions of LUPA, 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, and 25-12) on Sept. 22. The Lady Bears went to five sets with the Lady Panthers of VUU (25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-13) also on Sept. 22, 2018.
Shaw faced Virginia State twice during 2018, winning the first meeting 3-0 while the second meeting occurred in the conference championship. The Lady Bears won its second conference title in four years with a 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-19, 28-26) over the Trojans on Nov. 10.
