RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team continued its winning ways Wednesday evening as the Lady Bears defeated the Lady Panthers of Claflin University in three straight sets to claim its third straight conference victory. Shaw moves to 3-7 overall and 3-0 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action.
It was all Shaw as the Lady Bears posted line scores of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-14 highlighted by a dominating performance in nearly all facets of the game including a 45-12 ratio in kills, 11-0 in service aces and a 3-0 block margin.
Additionally, the Lady Bears hit .410 as a team while Claflin (2-5, 1-1 CIAA) had a .016 hitting percentage.
Senior outside hitter Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) was the game leader in kills after tallying 11 on 21 attempts for a .381 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) tossed up 32 assists to go along with five digs and four service aces while senior outside hitter Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) and senior outside hitter Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) both contributed 10 kills apiece.
Overall, the Lady Bears had six players tally at least one kill in the match. Defensively, eight of Shaw's players registered a dig, led by graduate senior and libero Emma Celentano (Raleigh, NC) who hauled in a match-high eight digs, five assists and two service aces.
Shaw will hit the road this weekend to compete in the CIAA Round-Up hosted by Virginia State on Saturday, Oct. 5 through Sunday, Oct. 6. The Lady Bears will take on Lincoln (Pa.) Saturday at 7 p.m. at the VSU Multipurpose Center, followed by a tilt with Virginia Union at 12 noon and Virginia State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
