SALISBURY, N.C. – Senior Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) registered 10 kills to help lead the Shaw University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep at Livingstone College Thursday evening inside New Trent Gymnasium.

The victory snapped a seven game losing streak for the Lady Bears (1-7) who started the season 0-7. The win also mark the first conference win on the season, giving Shaw a 1-0 start in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action while LC dips to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Senior Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) added eight kills and four blocks while senior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) contributed seven attacks. Sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) posted a match-high 25 assists, nine digs and three service aces while graduate-senior Emma Celentano (Raleigh, NC) finished with seven stops and two assists.

After the seventh tie in the opening set, Shaw used a 8-0 run to take a 15-9 lead forcing the Lady Blue Bears to call a timeout but that never altered the Lady Bears momentum as Shaw went ahead 21-15 after a service error from LC. The Lady Bears scored its final five points on three kills from senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) and two miscues by Livingstone for the 25-20 set win.

In the second set, Shaw erased a three-point deficit on a 7-2 scoring frame to regain the lead at 12-8 midway. A service ace pulled the Lady Blue Bears within one (14-13) but the Lady Bears scored eight unanswered points in a 12-3 spread to route the LC for the 25-15 set win and 2-0 lead in the match.

Trailing 4-0 in the third set, the Lady Bears roared back with a 7-3 run to knot the contest at 7-even. An attack error by LC and a kill from senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) pushed Shaw to a lead they would not relinquish as the Lady Blue Bears were held to just six points for the remainder of the stanza and the Lady Bears used a late 8-1 spread to secure the 25-14 win and 3-0 sweep.

Tonight's victory marks the first for head coach Jonathan Paulk, who enters his first season at the helm of the women's volleyball program at Shaw. The Lady Bears will return to action on Monday, Sept. 30 for its home opener against Johnson C. Smith University and Fan Night. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
