LADY BEARS FALL IN HARD-FOUGHT BATTLE WITH PFEIFFER, 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University women's volleyball put up a hard fight against the Pfeiffer University but dropped the highly contested match, 3-2 Tuesday night in Merner Gym.

Senior Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) paced Shaw with 11 kills, nine digs, four blocks and two service aces while senior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) added 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) dished out 32 assists while defensively, senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) collected 15 digs and senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) recorded 12 stops and nine kills.

The Falcons took the first set 25-18 but the Lady Bears responded with a 25-11 win in set two, highlighted by 11 kills (.184 hitting percentage) compared to PU's 3 (-.074 hitting percentage).

Both teams would split wins in the third and fourth set with Pfeiffer winning 25-19 and then Shaw claiming a 25-15 victory leading up the fifth frame which featured a 6-1 lead for the Lady Bears early on but the Falcons scored seven unanswered points to take a 8-6 lead.

After two ties, including its final at 13-even, a bad set by the Lady Bears provided Pfeiffer a one-point edge that ultimately led to a service ace for the Falcons and 15-13 set win.  

The loss dips the Lady Bears to 0-6 on the season while Pfeiffer improves to 8-2.

Shaw will return to action Thursday, Sept. 19 at Barton for a non-conference match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Wilson, N.C.
