MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-22) defeat to Chowan University Thursday evening at the Helms Center. The loss dips the Lady Bears to 0-5 on the year while the Hawks improve to 1-1 on the young season.
Senior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) led the Lady Bears with nine kills and 11 digs while sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) posted 17 assist, 11 digs and three service aces. Senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) recorded 11 stops in the setback.
The Lady Bears raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, taking advantage of the Hawks miscues. After four ties, Chowan used a 5-2 spurt to go ahead 12-9 midway. Shaw trimmed the deficit to at least four points but CU managed to hold off a Lady Bears comeback as the Hawks groomed an 8-2 scoring spread to secure the 25-16 set win.
In a back and forth effort during the second set, the Lady Bears managed to knot the contest at 22-even after a kill from Butler but the next possession, an attacking error provided the Hawks the one-point edge in route to a 3-0 run and 25-22 set win.
Facing a 2-0 deficit to begin the third stanza, CU used a .389 hitting percentage midway to own a 15-8 lead over Shaw. However, the Lady Bears never looked defeated as they continued to fight, chopping the deficit possession by possession and eventually pulling within two points (22-20) but a service error then provided a three-point cushion for the Hawks.
After scoring three straight, Shaw got within (24-22) but the Hawks registered the set win with a kill from Sydney Hiner for the 25-22 and 3-0 victory.
Shaw will return to action Sept. 17 at Pfeiffer for a non-conference match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
