RALEIGH, N.C. – Coming off a 0-4 start at the NSU Shark Invitational last weekend, the Shaw University women's volleyball team will look for its first win of the 2019 season when the Lady Bears travel to Murfreesboro, NC to face the Hawks of Chowan University in a nonconference tilt.
First serve is slated for 6 p.m. in the Helms Center.
The Lady Bears are led by senior Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) who has 12 kills on the season and a 1.00 kills per set average in four games while sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) has a team-high 40 assists (4.44 a/s) and 22 digs on the young season.
Defensively, senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) holds a team-best 49 digs and was recently named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Defensive Player of the Week announced today.
The Hawks are scheduled to face UNC Pembroke tonight at 6 p.m. for its season opener; CU posted an 11-17 overall record in 2018. Chowan returns three players from a season ago, including Alyssa Humes whom was named to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Second Team and All-Rookie Team after registering 149 kills and 301 digs.
Thursday's meeting will be the 16th meeting between the two programs since the first meeting in 2008. The Hawks lead the all-time series 11-4 but the Lady Bears have won the last four matches.
