FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Shaw University women's volleyball team fell twice to conclude the 2019 NSU' Shark Invitational Saturday afternoon as the Lady Bears suffered a 3-1 decision to Truman before suffering a 3-0 sweep to Millersville.

The Lady Bears drop to 0-4 on the young season while Truman improved to 2-1 overall and Millersville picking up its first win on the season at 1-2 overall.

GAME 1: Shaw (1), Truman (3)

Shaw got off to a great start early on in the first set, mounting a 16-9 lead on a kill from senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX). The Lady Bears would on to its lead for the remainder of the set, despite the Bulldogs pulling within one (19-18) on a kill from Morgan Smith but Shaw rooted a 5-0 run that would carry them to a 25-20 set win – its first on the young season.

The Bulldogs owned an 8-3 stand in the second frame, the Lady Bears cut the deficit to seven midway but that would be the closest Shaw got as Truman pulled away with the 25-13 win.

Shaw found themselves down 10-5 in the third stanza but a service ace from senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) pulled Shaw within four. Offensively, the Lady Bears struggled after being held to six points for the rest of the set, succumbing 25-12 and Truman taking a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

Truman orchestrated a 12-5 lead in the fourth frame and never let up as the Lady Bears was unable to recover from the deficit. The Bulldogs scored its last two points on kills from different players for the 25-12 set win.

Sosa led the Lady Bears with 10 kills, 12 digs and four assists – her first double-double of the season while senior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) aided 10 assists and nine stops.

GAME 2: Shaw (0), Millersville (3)

Held to just four points for most of the first set against Millersville, the Marauders used a 24-4 run to cruise to a 25-7 set win for an early 1-0 lead.

During the second stanza, Shaw trailed 11-8 but the Marauders pushed its lead to eight points thanks to a 6-2 run before owning a double digit lead in route to a 25-13 set win and 2-0 lead over Shaw.

The Lady Bears led 5-1 to start the third frame but Millersville managed to tie the knot at 6-even after scoring three-straight. The Marauders stole the lead from Shaw thanks to a miscue from the Lady Bears. The lead changed twice before Millersville plugged a 4-0 spurt forcing the Lady Bears to call a timeout with the score in favor of MU (14-9). Shaw would cut the deficit to four down the stretch but a shorthanded Lady Bears squad could not overcome the Marauders momentum, falling 25-17.

Senior Destiny Leake (Charlotte, NC) led the effort offensively for Shaw with six attacks while sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) dished out 11 assists and nine digs.

Shaw will return to action on Sept. 12 at Chowan. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. in Murfreesboro, N.C.
