LADY BEARS DROP A PAIR IN SEASON DEBUT

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Shaw University women's volleyball team opened its season at the 2019 NSU Shark Invitational on Friday as the Lady Bears fell to host Nova Southeastern by a score of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-21 followed by three-set loss (25-13, 25-14, 25-12) to Lewis.

 

Senior Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) combined for a team-high eight kills on the day while sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) dished out a total of 29 assists in the two matches. Shaw starts 0-2 in 2019 while both NSU and Lewis are 2-0 after the season opener.

 

GAME 1: Shaw (0), Nova Southeastern (3)

During the opening contest, Shaw trailed 12-7 after back-to-back miscues. The Lady Bears pulled within three (13-10) on a service error from NSU but the Sharks scored nine unanswered points before closing out the first set with the set win on a kill from McKenna Tucek.

 

Shaw was held to just six kills in the second set as the Sharks registered 13 on a .222 hitting percentage in route to the 2-0 lead despite the Lady Bears effort to the cut the deficit to one-point (17-16) midway but an 8-2 scoring frame provided the 25-18 win over Shaw heading into the third set.

 

After three ties early on, NSU took a four-point lead they would not relinquish down the stretch a ball handling error from Flowers gave the Sharks the 3-0 sweep and Shaw's first loss on the young season.

 

GAME 2: Shaw (0), Lewis (3)

In the second match of the day, Lewis held a 17-5 ratio in kills during the first set to take a 1-0 lead that featured a 19-8 spread on its way to the 25-13 win over the Lady Bears.

 

Shaw led by three early on in the second stanza but the Flyers gathered an 11-3 run to take the lead and hold a five-point advantage. Shaw would never get closer than five points for the remainder of the frame, falling 0-2 (25-14) into the third set.

 

Trailing by five, the Lady Bears ran out of gas and was unable to recover as the Flyers scored 12 of its final 14 points in the 25-12 third set win.

 

Shaw returns to the court on Saturday (Sept. 7) for the final day of the NSU Shark Invitational. The Lady Bears will take on Truman at 9:30 a.m., and then conclude play against Millersville at 12 noon.
