RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University Athletics announced its 2019 volleyball schedule Monday. The Lady Bears slate features six home matches in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium and seven matches against teams that were over .500 in 2018.
The Lady Bears are coming off a 2018 schedule that saw them post the programs fourth consecutive 20-match win season with a 23-9 overall record and 17-2 mark in league play while being crowned as the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference tournament champion, three-time CIAA Southern Division champion and the programs second ever NCAA tournament appearance.
Shaw opens the 2019 campaign at the Volleyball Shark Invitational hosted by Nova Southeastern on Sept. 6 for a pair of matches. The Lady Bears take on P.R. Mayaguez and NSU (Sept. 6) before squaring off with Truman and Lewis (Sept. 7) in first-time meetings.
The Lady Bears will spend the next four matches on the road, starting with a visit to Murfreesboro, N.C. to face Chowan on Sept. 12, following a meeting with Pfeiffer (Sept. 17), Barton (Sept. 19) and division foe Livingstone (Sept. 26) which will also mark its CIAA opener.
For its home opener, Shaw will play host to conference foe Johnson C. Smith on Sept. 30 for fan night where the Lady Bears welcome all local schools to Spaulding. Fans will have a chance to pick up the 2019 volleyball poster and schedule card.
On Oct. 2, Shaw remains at home to play Claflin for faculty and staff appreciation before going on the road to compete in the CIAA Round-Up (Oct. 6-7) in Ettrick, Va., hosted by Virginia State. The Lady Bears will take on schools from the CIAA's Northern Division.
For the next three matches, Shaw will begin a mini road skid, beginning with Winston-Salem State (Oct. 10), Fayetteville State (Oct. 14) and Saint Augustine's (Oct. 17) for Southern Division contests.
The Lady Bears will then travel to Bowie, Md., to participate in its final CIAA Round-Up on Oct. 19-20 hosted by Bowie State. Similar to the season's first round-up, Shaw will take on schools from the Northern Division.
For its annual Dig Pink tilt, the Lady Bears will host Livingstone (Oct. 23) while taking a trip to Charlotte, N.C. for its road finale against JCSU (Oct. 28).
Shaw will close out the regular season with three-straight home matches featuring Garnet Night against Winston-Salem State (Nov. 5) where the first 100 students receive a free t-shirt, Pack Spaulding Night against Fayetteville State (Nov. 11) and Senior Night versus Saint Augustine's (Nov. 14).
