SHAW VOLLEYBALL ENDS SEASON WITH LOSS TO WHEELING JESUIT IN NCAA ATLANTIC REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

WHEELING, WV The Shaw University women's volleyball team saw one of the best seasons in program history come to an end tonight, as the Lady Bears suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Wheeling Jesuit in the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament at the McDonough Center.

The loss ends the Lady Bears season with a record of 23-9.

The defeat also ends the careers of Shaw's outstanding seniors Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands), Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI), Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC), Jazmine Johnson-McCoy (Seattle, WA), Aliani Adelis (Phoenix, AZ), Quianna Myers (Orangeburg, SC) and Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL).

For Wattley, Murphy and Olmeda-Gonzalez, the trio led a Lady Bears squad to 93 victories, including a 59-8 mark in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) matches, four consecutive conference championship appearances, three Southern Division titles and two conference championships.

The Lady Bears never found a consistent rhythm in tonight's 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 loss to the Cardinals, as they recorded .094 hitting percentage.

Wattley led Shaw with nine kills and three blocks while Klink added seven kills and Olmeda-Gonzalez posted 22 assists and seven digs. Murphy recorded a team-high eight digs.

Shaw started off with a 3-2 lead in the opening set but WJU scored five-straight thanks to four consecutive errors by the Lady Bears to take a 7-3 lead. The Cardinals then climbed its lead to eight capped off by a kill from Haley Kramer. Shaw got within seven on a kill from Wattley and Klink but WJU used a 5-4 edge to close out the first set with the win.

The Lady Bears stayed closed early on in the second set but a kill from Stephanie Sylvester created distance for the Cardinals as WJU then owned a 11-5 frame. Shaw would trail by as many as 13 points before a kill from Kramer provided the set win and 2-0 lead for the Cardinals.

Despite the deficit, Shaw would not go quietly, fighting off three match points before a Cardinal kill ended the match.

With the win, Wheeling Jesuit (35-3) advances to Friday's regional semifinal, where they will face No. 5 Clarion at 7:30 p.m.

The winner from the Atlantic Regional advances to the national quarterfinals in Pittsburgh at the A.J. Palumbo Center, as part of the 2018 NCAA Division II Fall Festival. Teams advancing to the final site will be reseeded before the quarterfinals.
