WHEELING, WV – For the second time in program history, the Shaw University women's volleyball and Wheeling Jesuit University will meet in the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament Thursday, Nov. 15 on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. at the McDonough Center.
Live stats and video will be available on www.shawbears.com. The event is $10 for adults, students and senior citizens (65 and older) is $5. A three-day pass is $25.
The Lady Bears enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed after earning an automatic bid with winning its fourth Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Championship in program history last weekend.
Shaw (23-8) is led by a senior trio of rightside hitter Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) who has 283 total kills (2.75 kills per set) while senior setter Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) is the team's leader in assists with 749 total (7.27 assists per set) and senior libero Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) has collected 470 digs (4.56 digs per set). Additionally, senior middle hitter Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) has also been an instrumental factor this season with 232 kills (2.25 k/s) and 85 blocks (.83 blocks per set).
As for the Cardinals of WJU, they enter Thursday's match as the No. 1 overall seed after winning the Mountain East Conference (MEC). The Cardinals (34-3) offensive leader is Cassie Meyer with 544 kills (4.35 k/s), while Stephanie Sylvester has tossed up 1643 assists (13.14 a/s) and Audrey Francis is the team's best defensive player with 783 stops (6.26 d/s).
The last time these two teams met was Dec. 2, 2016 in the Regional Tournament with the Cardinals taking a 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-10) win over the Lady Bears. WJU leads the all-time series over Shaw at 1-0.
The other opening round matches on Thursday include second-seeded Gannon (30-2) against Shepherd (20-12), third-seeded Seton Hill (24-8), the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Champion, versus California (Pa.) (20-12) and fourth-seeded Shippensburg (25-7) against Clarion (21-11).
The winner from the Atlantic Regional advances to the national quarterfinals in Pittsburgh at the A.J. Palumbo Center, as part of the 2018 NCAA Division II Fall Festival. Teams advancing to the final site will be reseeded before the quarterfinals.
