SALEM, Va. – A total of six Shaw University women's volleyball players were selected to the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Team and three were chosen as Player of the Year recipients announced by the CIAA Women's Volleyball Coaches Association Thursday night.
Senior right side hitter Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Island) was named the Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Lady Bears in kills (248), ranking top-5 in the CIAA in kills per set while also surpassing her 1,000th career kill this season.
Senior libero Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) was chosen as Defensive Player of the Year after producing 433 total digs and digs per set (4.66) - leading the CIAA most of the year. She also recorded her 1,000th career dig earlier this season.
Senior setter Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) is the program's leader in assist and has led the Lady Bears in assists all four years. She recently surpassed her 3,000 career assist this year and has tallied over 646 assists, posting a 6.95 average per set.
With Wattley, Murphy and Olmeda-Gonzalez earning First Team accolades in conjunction with receiving Player of the Year awards senior middle hitter Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) rounded out the First Team recognition honors for Shaw, registering 203 kills – ranking second on the team. Klink ranked third in the CIAA for hitting percentage (.313) and 10th in the league in total blocks.
Junior middle hitter Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) and junior outside hitter Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) made Second Team All-CIAA. Moten charted 150 kills (1.72 kills per set) and 59 blocks this season, she led the CIAA in hitting percentage (.400). As for Sosa, she recorded 149 kills (1.77 kills per set) while defensively collected 147 digs (1.75 digs per set) and 23 blocks.
The Lady Bears will face Winston-Salem State tonight in the 2018 CIAA Women's Volleyball Semi-Final at the Salem Civic Center. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. The match will offer live video on www.shawbears.com.
