RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw Lady Bears women's volleyball team swept Elizabeth City State (25-13, 25-17, 25-11) Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Tournament held at the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the campus of Shaw University. The Lady Bears (21-8) advance to the semifinals to take on Winston-Salem State on Friday, Nov. 9 in Salem, Va. at 7:30 p.m.
Winston-Salem State defeated Virginia Union, 3-2 in Richmond, Va.
The Lady Bears served up 35 total kills, 29 assists and eight service aces for the game. Shaw hit .233 for the contest while holding the Lady Vikings (4-23) to -.108.
Senior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) who registered eight kills to go along with six blocks led the effort for the Lady Bears while junior Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) finished with seven attacks and two blocks led Shaw. Senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) chipped in 21 assists while senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) collected 19 digs.
Semi-finals matches are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 9 while the championship match will tip off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 10. The 2018 CIAA Volleyball Championship at Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia is free and open to the public.
