FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Having won the first meeting against Fayetteville State with ease, the Shaw University women's volleyball team was unable to make it five as the Lady Bears fell to the Lady Broncos, 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 21-25 and 23-25) Monday night in Felton J. Capel Arena.

Monday's setback marks the first time in two seasons that the Lady Bears have suffered two losses in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

Despite opening the first set strong, the Lady Bears was never able to get into a consistent rhythm offensively and had several lapse defensively. The Lady Bears showed some flashes of success and got big efforts from their seniors but was unable to sustain it for long periods of time.

Shaw falls to 19-8 overall, 15-2 in the conference and 9-2 within the Southern Division. Fayetteville State improves to 11-11 on the year, 11-4 in the CIAA and 7-2 in the South.

Shaw opened the match with a strong first set, as the Lady Bears recorded a .294 team attacking percentage en route to a 25-10 win.

A service error from FSU gave Shaw a 10-4 lead but the Lady Broncos captured nine points in a row to take a 13-10 lead over Shaw. From there, the Lady Bears had to play from behind and although Shaw pulled within three that would be the closest they'd get the rest of the way as a kill from Jessica Williams gave FSU the set win and tied the match at 1-1.

With the scored tied at 17-all in a tight third set, FSU took a two-point cushion forcing Shaw to call a timeout to regroup. The Lady Bears capitalized on a Lady Bronco miscue but FSU punctured a 5-3 scoring frame to take the 25-21 set win and hold a 2-1 lead over Shaw in the match.

With momentum and the home crowd behind them, the fourth set would be all FSU. The Lady Bears tried to make a comeback after two kills from senior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) down the stretch but it wouldn't be enough as the Lady Broncos sealed the deal on a kill from Teeya McLean.

Wattley led all scorers with 15 kills and three blocks while senior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) added 12 kills and two digs and junior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) chipped in her second double-double of the year with 10 attacks and 12 digs. Senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) finished with 44 assists – surpassing her 3,000th career mark in assists.

Senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) finished with 20 digs and three assists in the setback.

Shaw will return to action Friday, Nov. 2 at Saint Augustine's. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Emery Gymnasium.
