SALISBURY, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team made program history as the Lady Bears earned its 15th-straight victory at Livingstone College for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) conference match with a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-23, 25-12) win over the Lady Blue Bears Friday night in the New Trent Gymnasium.
The previous record was 14 matches in which the Lady Bears acquired two consecutive seasons (2016 and 2017) but the streak was snapped twice by Fayetteville State.
The Lady Bears now own a 17-6 overall record and 13-0 mark in the CIAA. Livingstone drops to 7-12 on the year and 6-9 in the league.
Shaw had an 8-4 lead after a service ace from freshman Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL). LC then tied the set at 9-9 on a kill Dekiya Wilson-Thomas but the Lady Bears would go on to outscore the Lady Blue Bears 16-5 en route to the 25-14 first set win.
The second stanza would feature five ties until the Lady Bears took the lead on a service ace from senior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) that would ultimately lead to Shaw scoring five straight before closing out the second set with a 7-6 scoring advantage capped off by a kill from Flowers for the 25-23 edge and 2-0 lead.
A kill from junior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) led to a 13-1 lead for Shaw in the third set, the Lady Bears exploded down the stretch with a 13-point lead after a LC miscue. Shaw scored its last two points on a kill from senior Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) and junior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) for the 25-12 set win and 3-0 sweep.
Senior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) finished with a team-best eight kills (.462 hitting) while senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out a match-high 21 assists and senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) added eight digs.
Shaw will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Johnson C. Smith. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
