RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team will return to action this weekend when the Lady Bears lace up for the second Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) round-up hosted by Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va.
All matches will be played at Big Ben's Home Court located on 2206 Westwood Ave, Richmond, Va. 23230.
The Lady Bears (5-6, 3-0 CIAA) will participate in two matches on Saturday (Sept. 22). Beginning at 12 noon, Shaw will go head-to-head with the Lady Lions of Lincoln (Pa.), followed by a 4 p.m. match with the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union. Shaw will wrap up the round up with an 11 a.m. tilt against the Bulldogs of Bowie State.
Shaw has not competed since the last CIAA Round-Up back on Sept. 8-9 in Petersburg, Va. due Hurricane Florence. Despite the break, the Lady Bears went 3-0 in that round up, sweeping Elizabeth City State, Chowan and Virginia State by the scores of 3-0.
Senior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) leads the offensive attack with 94 kills (2.47 k/s average) while senior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) post 83 total kills on a hitting percentage of .327. Senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) continues to orchestrate the offense with 5.68 assists per set; she has 216 on the year thus far.
Senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) leads the conference and the Lady Bears in digs with 159 on the season and an average of 4.18 digs per set. Klink has a team-best 34 blocks and ranks third amongst the CIAA at .89 blocks per set while Wattley and junior Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) post 27 and 18 blocks, respectively.
Lincoln (Pa.) is 0-5 on the season and 0-3 in the CIAA. Virginia Union is 2-11 overall and 1-3 in the league while Bowie State owns a 1-3 mark and stands 0-3 amongst the conference.
Following this weekend's action, Shaw will head to Banner Elk, N.C. to face Lees McRae at 7 p.m.
