PETERSBURG, Va. Shaw University women's volleyball made quick work of Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon during the first day of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at the VSU Multipurpose Center on the campus of Virginia State. The Lady Bears earned the sweep by the scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-13.

The win improves Shaw to 3-6 on the year and 1-0 in the CIAA while the Lady Vikings fall to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Junior Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) led the way with a season-best 11 kills on .667 hitting while senior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) and junior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) both contributed seven kills apiece. Senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) dished out 24 assists while senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) recorded 10 digs, followed by Sosa with nine.

The Lady Bears took advantage of its opponent poor hitting in all three sets, including a .385 hitting percentage in the first set, .375 in the second set and .346 in the third set for a total of 41 kills compared to ECSU's 10.

The first set was all Shaw as the Lady Bears sprinted out to the 25-14 win. Shaw led 11-6 after five errors from the Lady Vikings and never looked back as ECSU would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.

Shaw pushed its lead 2-0 after the second set victory, the Lady Bears ran off 7-1 scoring margin led by two service aces from Olmeda-Gonzalez and two kills from Wattley – and never looked back en route to the 25-10 win. ECSU made things interesting to begin the third set but Shaw pulled away after scoring six-straight to clinch the match.

Shaw will return to action Sunday, first with a 1 p.m. match against the Hawks of Chowan and then a 4 p.m. tilt against the Trojans of Virginia State. Live stats will be available for both matches.
