RALEIGH, N.C. – Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference play begins this weekend for the Shaw University women's volleyball team as the Lady Bears travel to Petersburg, Va., for the first CIAA Round-Up of 2018 hosted by Virginia State University Saturday, Sept. 8 – Sunday, Sept. 9.
SU will face Elizabeth City State on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. and on Sunday, the Lady Bears will square off with Chowan at 1 p.m. and then Virginia State at 6 p.m. All games will be played at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
The Lady Bears (2-6) started of the 2018 campaign against very tough opponents, including the Embry-Riddle Tournament and the UNC Pembroke Invitational. Shaw is coming off a 2-2 finish at the UNC-Pembroke showing.
Despite the slow start, previous history has showed that the Lady Bears really turn things up a notch around the beginning of conference play. For the past two seasons, Shaw has combined for a 30-2 overall record amongst CIAA opponents.
After eight games thus far, the Lady Bears have averaged 11.24 kills per set (.158 hitting percentage), 10.34 assists per set, 1.66 blocks per set, 1.90 service aces per set and 14.66 digs per set as a unit.
Offensively, seniors Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) and Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) have shared the hitting efforts as they both have 71 kills apiece on the young season. In addition, Klink was honored as CIAA Player of the Week for her efforts last weekend.
No surprise, senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) continues to orchestrate the offense with 166 assists (5.72 a/s) while senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) leads the team defensively with 122 digs. Both Klink and Wattley are one and two in total blocks with 24 and 23, respectively.
Elizabeth City State (0-4) is still in search of their first win of 2018, the Lady Vikings have lost all four matches by the scores of 3-0. ECSU's Jahera Dangerfield has tallied 12 kills, Asia Jones leads the setting unit with 18 assist while Zhiasia Bazemore has recorded 18 digs in the past four games.
The Hawks of Chowan is also looking for their first win of 2018 as they enter the Round-Up 0-3 on the season. Kayla Gates leads the offense with 13 kills and a 1.30 kills per set average while Micayla Pope has 50 total kills and Sydney Hiner has collected 28 digs.
Virginia State (6-3) comes off a 3-0 setback to Shepherd in their last outing. Jailyn Ivey leads the Trojans with 84 kills; Bria Anderson has 137 assists while Kennedi Cannon posts 83 digs. Collectively, VSU produces 8.97 kills per set, 8.03 assist, 1 block and 13.52 digs per outing.
