SHAW VOLLEYBALL TRAVELS TO UNC PEMBROKE INVITATIONAL

RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University women's volleyball will look to get their first win of the 2018 season this weekend when the Lady Bears travel to Pembroke, N.C. to compete in the UNC Pembroke Invitational Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1.

 

The Lady Bears will face UNC Pembroke Friday at 9 a.m. The game will offer live video and statistics online, followed by a 3 p.m. matchup with Coker. On Saturday, Shaw and Lees-McRae will square off at 9 a.m. and then 1 p.m. match against Lenoir-Rhyne to conclude the tournament.

 

Shaw (0-4) is hoping to snap a four-game skid after competing in the Embry-Riddle Tournament last weekend where the Lady Bears fought hard but fell short in 2-4 matches. Senior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) leads the Lady Bears offensively with 36 kills (2.25 k/s) while senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) has dished out 90 assists and senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) has collected 69 digs.

 

UNC PEMBROKE

The Braves enter the invitational with a 1-3 record to begin 2018. UNC Pembroke lost two, including 3-1 defeat by the hands of Coker at the FMU/Coker Invitational. Amber Tyndall is the current offensive leader with 30 kills on the young season and a 2.73 kills per set average. Bailee Jones anchors the offense at the setter position with 63 assists while Anna Heinz is the team's leader in digs (51).

 

Last season, Shaw defeated UNC Pembroke, 3-1 in Pembroke, N.C.

 

COKER

Coker stands 3-1 to start the 2018 season. The Cobras are coming off a victory over UNC Pembroke Aug. 25. Taylor du Bray leads the offensive attack with 48 kills (4.36) in four games while Cayley Gunter posts a 2.50 kills per set average with the team's second-best total in kills (30).

 

Shaw and Coker will meet for the first time since 2015. The Lady Bears lost to the Cobras, 3-0 in Raleigh.

 

LEES MCRAE

The Bobcats enter the tournament on a four-game skid after competing in the Coker/FMU Invitational. LMC suffered a 3-0 setback to Francis Marion in their last outing. Caitlyn Smirne has a team-best 28 kills (2.33 k/s) while Megan Gallion has a team-high 56 assists and Allie Cunningham has collected 33 digs.

 

The Lady Bears met Lees McRae during the 2017 season as Shaw nearly earned a sweep, defeating the Bobcats 3-1 in Spaulding.

 

LENOIR RHYNE

LR enters the 2018 season picked to finish eighth in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC). The Bears are coming off a 10-16 overall record and 6-14 mark against league opponents. LR has one player returning that made the All-SAC Preseason Second Team in Taylor Prall.
