DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The Shaw University women's volleyball squad dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) decision to Westminster College to conclude the Embry-Riddle Tournament inside the ICI Center. The loss dipped the Lady Bears to a 0-4 start on the young season while the Griffins bumped up to 2-2 on the year.

Shaw got off to a slow start in the first set, the Lady Bears trailed 6-1 before making a run to close the gap and then take the lead at 8-6. The set featured four ties late but it would be the Griffins who would come out on top after two attacking errors from Shaw and a kill from Audrey Green that lifted Westminster past Shaw, 25-22.

Westminster used a 6-0 run at the 13-12 mark to put the second set away, as the Lady Bears were held to just 16 points – their lowest point-spread the entire weekend.

In the third set, Shaw kept pace with Griffin but Westminster went on a 7-2 run ignited off a kill from Whitney Wakefield to go up 16-10. The Lady Bears could not seem to find any rhythm as a unit in that spurt which resulted in the 25-19 setback and sweep for the Griffins.

Despite the loss, junior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) recorded a team-best nine kills to go along with four digs and one block while senior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) added seven kills and one block. Senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) finished with 16 assists and four digs while freshman Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) contributed 11 assists and one dig.

Senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) collected 16 digs to lead the defense for Shaw.

The Lady Bears will look to bounce back and snap the four-game skid at the UNC Pembroke Tournament beginning Aug. 31 through Sept. 1 in Pembroke, N.C.
