WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL TO BEGIN 2018 SEASON AT EMBRY-RIDDLE TOURNAMENT

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team will start its 2018 season on the road in Daytona Beach, Fla., this week in the Embry-Riddle Tournament. The Lady Bears will begin with a match against Valdosta State at 1 p.m. and Embry-Riddle at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24 and will continue competition into Saturday, Aug. 25 against Lynn (1 p.m.) and Westminster (5 p.m.).

Shaw finished the 2017 campaign with an overall record of 27-5 – marking a program best, going 15-1 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference and finishing as runner-up champions. The Lady Bears enter the upcoming season having lost one starter and returning 12 players from last year's roster. Shaw will rely on seniors Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI), Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI), Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC), Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR), along with junior Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) to lead the team to another victorious year.

 

The Lady Bears were recently picked to finish first in the CIAA Preseason Poll for the second-consecutive season announced on Aug. 15. Shaw had five players selected to the All-Preseason team. Additionally, the Lady Bears welcome five newcomers that features three transfers and one true freshman.

 

Valdosta State were 12-17 overall and 6-10 against Gulf South Conference opponents in 2017. The Lady Blazers return eight players from a season ago, including Kayla Widera who was named to the GSC Preseason Team. VSU is led by first year head coach Kaleigh Zoucha.

 

Embry-Riddle finished 13-13 overall as full members of the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) and NCAA DII. The Eagles held an 8-12 record against league opponents and were recently chosen sixth in the SSC Preseason Poll.

 

Lynn enters the week having returned 12 letter winners from 2017 that finished 9-17 overall and 7-13 amongst the SSC. The Knights are led by Adam Milewski in his third season.

 

Westminster enters the 2018 season with nine returners from a team that went 10-16 overall and 7-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) led by Al Givens in his fifth season at the helm.

 

Shaw will meet all four teams for the first time in program history. Following the Embry-Riddle Tournament, the Lady Bears will travel to participate in the UNC Pembroke Labor Day Weekend Luau beginning on Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
