LADY BEARS PICKED TO FINISH FIRST IN CIAA VOLLEYBALL

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference along with the Volleyball Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association picked Shaw University women's volleyball to finish first in league play and named five Lady Bears to the All-CIAA Preseason Team, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI), senior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC), junior Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA), senior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) and senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) were each named to the preseason First-Team – comprising almost half of the 12 selections.

The Lady Bears are a two-time defending Southern Division champions as well as conference runner-up champions, finishing the 2017 campaign with a 15-1 league record. Last season, Shaw advanced to its third consecutive conference championship title match and finished the season with an overall record of 27-5 – the programs all-time best record.

For the second-straight year, the Lady Bears were a unanimous selection to win the conference title, earning 134 points. Fayetteville State collected 115 while the defending champions Winston-Salem State tabbed third place with a total of 114 points in the poll.

The Lady Bears will kick off their 2018 season on Aug. 24-25 when Shaw travels to Daytona Beach, Fla., to participate in the Embry-Riddle Tournament.
