RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team will host Fayetteville State University in a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division rematch inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on Monday, Nov. 6. First serve is set for 6 p.m. and will be shown live on www.shawbears.com.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early, as doors will open one hour prior to first serve. Admission is free to the public.
The two teams met earlier this season, and FSU won three-straight to give the Lady Bears their first sweep by a conference opponent this season. The loss also snapped a 13-match win-streak for Shaw in Fayetteville, N.C.
Since the loss, Shaw (23-4, 13-1 CIAA, 7-1 South) has won their last six of seven games, including a 3-0 sweep of division foe Winston-Salem State on Oct. 31. The victory was a complete team effort by the Lady Bears led by junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) who had 10 kills, three blocks and three digs in the win.
As a team, the Lady Bears leads the CIAA conference in kills (1203), kills per set (12.53), hitting percentage (.228), assists (1092), assists per set (11.38) and points (1598.0). Klink leads the offensive unit for Shaw with 227 kills (2nd in CIAA), she also has a conference second-best .335 hitting percentage and is third with an average of .98 blocks per set (3rd in CIAA).
Coming off a season-ending injury last season during the CIAA tournament, junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) proves why she is still one of the best amongst the CIAA, ranking fifth in the league with an average of 2.51 kills per set. Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) is fourth, posting an average of 6.26 assists per set while senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) has 339 digs on the season – good for fourth in the CIAA.
FSU (19-8, 12-2 CIAA, 6-2 South) is currently third in the south and has two losses, to Winston-Salem State twice this season. The Lady Broncos lead the CIAA in digs (1427) and digs per set (14.86). Individually, FSU is paced by Arlicia Ortiz who averages 2.23 kills per frame. She ranks sixth among the CIAA. Paige Clark has a team-best 3.43 digs per set (209) on the year while Nakia McKinnie directs the offensive tune for FSU with 4.96 assists per set (337 total), ranking her eighth in the league. FSU is coming off a 3-1 win over Lees McRae on Oct. 31.
When the two teams squared off on Oct. 9, the Lady Broncos outhit the Lady Bears with a hitting percentage of .221 to .049. Ortiz finished with nine kills and 18 digs while Mckinnie dished out 19 assists.
Should Shaw win today's match, they will clinch the Southern Division title for the second-consecutive year under fourth-year head coach DiShondra Goree.
Following Monday's clash, Shaw will close out the regular season with home match against cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University on Thursday, Nov. 9 for Senior Day. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
