CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Shaw University women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 road victory and season sweep of Johnson C. Smith University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division match Monday night inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
With the win, the Lady Bears improve to 22-4 overall and 12-1 in the CIAA while JCSU drops to 12-6 overall and 8-5 in the league. In division standings, Shaw posts a 6-1 mark while the Golden Bulls stand 3-4.
The Lady Bears were led by junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) who had a game-high 10 kills in the win. Junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) and sophomore Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) both tallied seven attacks, respectively.
Leading the setters was junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) who finished with 25 assists while junior Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) added 10. Senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) recorded 16 digs while Murphy gabbed nine stops.
Shaw came out the gate with a 6-1 lead in the first set before the Lady Bears ballooned to their largest scoring frame of the set at 11 points thanks to a 11-1 run midway. Shaw would sustain their lead as the Lady Bears got their set point on a kill by Murphy for the 25-11 win.
In the second set, the Lady Bears saw themselves trailing 12-6 but that deficit was demolished when Shaw surged back to pull within two four times, following four-straight to the lead (20-19). From there, it was all the Lady Bears led by five unanswered points to claim the 25-20 victory.
After a 9-4 lead in the third set for Shaw, JCSU kept close and eventually tied the set at 10-10 but the Lady Bears would produce a 5-2 spurt to keep some distance that ultimately led to stifling defense as Shaw held the Golden Bulls to just five points the remainder of the contest while on their way to the 25-17 win and 3-0 sweep.
Shaw will continue their road slate at Winston-Salem State University on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. The Lady Bears will close out the 2017 regular season schedule with two home matches against Fayetteville State (Nov. 6) and Saint Augustine's (Nov. 9). Both matches are scheduled for 6 p.m.
