WILSON, N.C. -  The Shaw University women's volleyball team defeated the University of Mount Olive, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 26-24), before falling to host Barton College, 3-1 (17-25, 28-26, 17-25, 12-25) in a tri-match Saturday afternoon at the Wilson Gymnasium. The Lady Bears are now 21-4 on the year, while UMO is (8-15) and BC is 16-4.

Junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) paced the Lady Bears offensively with a total of 24 kills, nine digs and eight blocks in both matches combined. Junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) finished with 17 attacks and 20 digs while junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) contributed 38 assists and nine digs, including 21 handouts versus UMO.

The Lady Bears hit .242 against the Trojans and held a 43-37 advantage in digs. Shaw took favor of UMO's miscues down the stretch for the 25-20 win in set one, followed by a whopping 19-10 lead in the second frame that ultimately led to a Shaw 25-21 victory in the second set. After nine ties in the third stanza, Shaw clinched the win thanks to three-straight kills that featured two from Wattley, giving the Lady Bears the 26-24 win and sweep of the Trojans.

In the loss to the host Bulldogs, Shaw trailed 14-5 in the opening set. The Lady Bears pulled within seven (22-15) but that would be the closest SU got as BC orchestrated a 3-2 run to secure the 25-17 win. The Lady Bears came from behind to take their first lead 14-13 in the second set after scoring four-straight. Despite four ties late, Shaw managed to bag the win on an error from BC and a block by Wattley and junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC), giving Shaw the 28-26 edge.

In the third set, SU had a two-point lead (6-4) but the Bulldogs made quick work on a 5-0 spurt that forced the Lady Bears to call a timeout as BC led 9-6. From there, BC controlled the set and built a lead as large as eight en route to the 25-17 win over Shaw.

Looking to regroup in the following set, the Lady Bears took a 2-0 lead early but that would be erased after the Bulldogs tallied seven unanswered points to plant a 7-2 gain. Although Shaw cut the deficit to three (14-11), the Lady Bears were never able to get any closer for the rest of the set as the Bulldogs organized a 11-1 run down the stretch for the 25-17 win.

Shaw will return to action and conference play on Monday, Oct. 23 at Johnson C. Smith University. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
