RALEIGH, N.C. -  Junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwongo, WI) recorded 10 kills and nine digs to will the Shaw University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University Thursday night in Emery Gymnasium. The Lady Bears won straight sets by the scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 30-28.


The win gave Shaw its 10th victory in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), as the Lady Bears now stand 18-3 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Division. With the loss, SAU falls to 4-7 overall, 4-7 in the league and 1-4 in the division.


Sophomore Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) registered eight kills while junior Jazmine Johnson-McCoy (Seattle, WA) and sophomore Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) finished with seven attacks apiece. Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) recorded a match-high 24 assists, following sophomore Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) with 10.


The Lady Bears punched a 9-1 run to open up the first set. Shaw's hot start would continue throughout the first frame as the Lady Bears owned a 20-11 advantage and would not relent on the lead for the 25-17 win led by Murphy who had five kills in that set.


Although Shaw led the entire way, the Lady Falcons stayed close up until the Lady Bears mounted a 13-5 run midway en route to a 24-15 set win.


Shaw started the third set with a 5-0 lead before SAU finally got on board thanks to a serving error by the Lady Bears. Midway through the stanza, the Lady Falcons scored four unanswered points to take its first lead of the night 16-15 but that would be short-lived as the Lady Bears tallied seven-straight to lead 22-16. Just when it appeared as if the Lady Bears were going to walk away easy with the set win, SAU went on a 5-0 run to lead 25-24 over Shaw. After four ties down the stretch, the Lady Bears finally closed out the match with a kill from Klink and an attack error by SAU's Shakera Hall.


The Lady Bears will return to action Saturday, Oct. 14 at Claflin University for a nonconference tilt. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
