FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team's 13-match win-streak was snapped Monday night at Fayetteville State University as the Lady Bears suffered its second 3-0 sweep on the season by the Lady Broncos in Felton J. Capel Arena. The loss dropped Shaw to 17-3 overall, 9-1 in the conference while FSU improves to 14-6 on the season and 9-1 in the league.
After tonight's loss, the division standings show a three-way tie with the Lady Bears, Winston-Salem and now FSU all with a 3-1 record in the Southern Division.
For the contest, Shaw combined for just 35 kills compared to the Lady Broncos 39 attacks. The game was ultimately decided by the Lady Bears hitting percentage which consisted of .049 for the game and 29 miscues while FSU registered a hitting percentage of .221 and just 16 errors.
The Lady Bears were responsible for a season-low -.026 hitting percentage, including 10 errors in the 25-17 loss in the first set before recording 12 errors on 13-of-52 attacks (.019 hitting percentage) for the 25-21 loss in set two. In the third and which would be final set, Shaw tallied 13 kills on 33 total attacks but deemed seven errors for the 25-22 setback.
Sophomore Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) finished with a team-best nine kills while junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) and sophomore Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) contributed eight and seven kills, respectively. Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) added 15 assists and senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) recorded 19 digs in the loss.
Shaw will look to recover with a road contest at crosstown-rival Saint Augustine's on Thursday, Oct. 12. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
