CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coming off a hot start in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) conference, Shaw University's head women's volleyball coach DiShondra Goree and junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) of the Lady Bears volleyball program received CIAA Coach of the Week and Player of the week accolades for the Lady Bears outstanding performances during week 5 announced by the CIAA Tuesday afternoon.
Under Goree's leadership, the Lady Bears went undefeated in CIAA action during week five, including the CIAA round-up #2 held in Petersburg, Va. on Sept. 30 through Oct. 1. Shaw defeated Johnson C. Smith, 3-0 on Sept. 25 before going perfect (3-0) thanks to a sweep over Elizabeth City State, a 3-2 triumph over Virginia State and 3-0 decision against Bowie State.
5-foot-10 middle hitter, Klink hauled in a total of 41 kills, 15 digs and 10 blocks in the Lady Bears four matches last week. She registered a match-high 15 kills and five blocks against the Trojans and 12 kills against the Lady Vikings.
With the terrific start in conference action, Shaw stands 16-2 overall and 8-0 in the CIAA. The Lady Bears will return to action Thursday, Oct. 5 versus division foe and also undefeated in the league, Winston-Salem State for "Greek Night" in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
