RALEIGH, N.C. - After winning two during week four, the Shaw University women's volleyball team will host Johnson C. Smith University on Monday, Sept. 25 for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest and Faculty & Staff Day. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
To show appreciation, the Lady Bears will recognize faculty and staff members that have impacted or played a major role in the women's volleyball student-athletes experience at Shaw.
The Lady Bears welcome the Golden Bulls of JCSU with a 12-2 overall record, 4-0 record in conference play and 1-0 mark within the division. Last week, Shaw defeated Livingstone, 3-0 on Thursday, Sept. 21 and Lees McCrae, 3-1 Friday night in Spaulding.
Juniors Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) and Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) both combined for 40 kills total in the two wins last week. Klink recorded a team-high 12 kills, career-high/match-high eight blocks (5 solo) and three digs against Lees McCrae while Wattley also registered 11 kills, five digs and three blocks against LMC.
Last Friday, junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) reached a career milestone after earning her 2,000th carreer assist to become the program's second all-time leader in assists. She amassed 32 assists, 11 digs and four service aces versus LMC.
Defensively, the Lady Bears are led by senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) and junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) who both finished with 16 and 14 digs, respectively. Brooks and Murphy have combined for 344-of-770 total digs for Shaw this season.
JCSU (6-1, 4-0 CIAA, 1-0 South) heads to Spaulding after defeating a Morris College, 3-0 at home on Sept. 23. The Golden Bulls were led by Anteesha Smooths with 11 kills, followed by Taylor Hendrikson and Karina Pressoir with six attacks apiece.
This will be the first of two meetings between the two programs this season. Last year, Shaw swept the season series over the Golden Bulls by earning 3-0 victories twice. The Lady Bears have won the last four meetings against JCSU.
