RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior setter Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) moved into second all-time at Shaw University with her 2,000th career assist as the Lady Bears women's volleyball team defeated Lees McCrae 3-1 Friday night in a nonconference tilt. With the win, Shaw improves to 12-2 on the season while the Bobcats dropped to 1-8 overall.
Junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) led Shaw with 12 kills, a match-high eight blocks, three digs and two service aces, while junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) had 11 kills, five digs and three blocks. Junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) recorded nine kills and 14 digs while senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) registered 16 stops and Olmeda-Gonzalez hauled in a match-high 32 assists, 11 digs and four service aces. Sophomore Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) also dished out 14 assist in the win.
Shaw held a .336 attack percentage, while holding LMC to .138 attack percentage. The Lady Bears captured set wins in the first (25-17) and second (25-18) before falling 25-22 in the third. Shaw would make quick work of the Bobcats in the fourth to claim a 25-14 win and 3-1 match victory.
In the first set, both teams exchanged points until midway when the Lady Bears groomed a four-point run to lead 16-12 forcing the Bobcast to call a timeout. Shaw would use a 9-5 scoring frame to claim the 25-17 set win. For the set, the Lady Bears hit 48-percent while holding the LMC to 19-percent.
Similar to the first, the Lady Bears and Bobcats battled back and forth as the contest tied six times before miscues from Shaw allowed LMC to go up four (14-10). After a Lady Bears timeout, Shaw scored six unanswered points to take a lead they would not relinquish led by four different Lady Bears who contributed two kills apiece in the 25-18 set win.
After a couple of bad sets offensively, the Lady Bears found themselves down 12-9 in the third set before they broke even on miscues from the Bobcats. LMC regained the lead on a serving error from Olmeda-Gonzalez that led to a three-straight for the Bobcats. Shaw trailed by as many as six and would pull within two but LMC maintained their ground to survive the 25-22 third set comeback.
A kill by Klink put the Lady Bears up 10-6 in the fourth set, a possession later, LMC called a timeout after an attack error from Lauren Arnold that would give the Lady Bears a five-point edge. From there, the Lady Bears never looked back as Shaw held the Bobcats to just eight points down the stretch and scoring 10 of their own to claim the 25-14 win.
The Lady Bears will return to action on Monday, Sept. 25 at home in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium for a CIAA Southern Division contest and Faculty & Staff Day with Johnson C. Smith University. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
