WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – An all-around team effort gave the Shaw University women's volleyball team a 3-0 sweep of Chowan University Sunday afternoon during the last day of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up.
Shaw now stands 10-2 overall and 3-0 within the CIAA while Chowan falls to 1-9 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) recorded a match-high nine kills to go along with three digs and one block while junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) and junior Jazmine Johnson-McCoy (Seattle, WA) both tallied seven kills each. Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) amassed 18 assists and sophomore Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) gave out 10 assist.
In the first set Shaw started off with a 5-0 lead, a lead they would not look back on to cruise to the 25-18 set win. Both teams went back and forth in the second frame as the Lady Bears pulled off a 3-0 run midway to route Chowan 25-22. The Lady Bears showed excellent defense in the third set, holding the Hawks to just five kills to take the 25-14 win.
The Lady Bears will begin conference division play on Thursday, Sept. 21 when they travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face Livingstone College at 6 p.m.
