RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's volleyball team will travel to Laurinburg, N.C. on Wednesday to face off against St. Andrews in a nonconference match. The Lady Bears and Lady Knights will play at 6:30 p.m.
Coverage will be available on www.shawbears.com. Both teams have met each other for the last three years. Last season, they split with St. Andrews taking the first meeting, 3-0 on the Lady Bears home court and then Shaw would break even with a 3-2 victory in Laurinburg on Oct. 27, 2016.
Last Week: The Lady Bears posted a 6-2 overall record after going 3-2 at the Concord Classic Tournament Sept. 7-9 in Athens, WV. Shaw opened up the week with tri-match competition versus Converse and UNC Pembroke where the Lady Bears went undefeated at 2-0, defeating the Valkyries 3-0 and 3-1 against the Lady Braves.
Shaw suffered its first loss on the season to West Virginia Tech (3-0), followed by a 3-1 setback to Ohio Valley but the Lady Bears would recover to conclude the Concord Classic Tournament with a pair of wins against host Concord (3-2) and West Virginia Wesleyan (3-1).
The Players: Junior and CIAA All-Preseason honoree Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) was named to the All-Tournament Team. She hauled in a total of 64 kills and 82 digs for the week where she recorded double figures in four of the seven games played this week that featured 15 kills and 26 digs against Concord. Murphy is averaging a team-best 2.59 kills per set and 3.33 digs a match. Junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) is the team's second leader in kills with an average of 2.65 kills per set, she leads the team this season with blocks at 29 on the young season (1.12 blocks per set).
In the setter position, Shaw is led by sophomore Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) who currently has a team-best 123 total assists (5.13 assists per game). CIAA All-Preseason and junior Michelle Olmeda Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) has dished out 103 assists (6.06 assists per game), she sat out the last two matches due to a minor injury.
The Opponent: St. Andrews is affiliated the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Lady Knights are 3-3 overall after defeating Allen by the score of 3-1 on Sept. 7. Tessa Smith leads the pack with 80 kills on the season and an average of 3.33 kills per game. At the setter position, Shalia Powell has 125 assists (5.21 a/g) on the year. Defensively, Austin Payne is the Lady Knights leader with 105 digs total (4.38 digs per game).
Next Up: Shaw will begin conference play when they participate in the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Lady Bears will face Virginia Union (Sept. 16 at 12 p.m.), Lincoln (Pa.) at 6 p.m. and Chowan on Sept. 17 at 11 a.m.
