ATHENS, WV – The Shaw University women's volleyball team bounced back from yesterday's setbacks with two wins to conclude the Concord Classic Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bears defeated host Concord in a 3-2 thriller before securing a 3-1 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan. With the two wins, Shaw improves to 6-2 overall.
Against CU (2-5), Shaw took the first set 25-23 but would fold in the second and third set by the scores 25-19 and 25-23. In the fourth set, the Lady Bears made a comeback after trailing the match 2-1 when they took a 17-15 lead on a kill from senior Deja Simpson (Orlando, FL). Shaw held on to the lead despite CU's efforts to stay close but a kill from sophomore Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) secured the 25-23 win for Shaw which led to a fifth set.
In the last frame, both teams went point for point as there were five ties but the Lady Bears came out on top with the help of two blocks from both Moten and a block from junior Jazmine Johnson-McCoy (Seattle, WA) to seal the 3-2 thriller.
Four players registered double digits in kills for the Lady Bears, including junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) with a match-high 16 kills, followed by junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) who charted 15 kills, Moten tabbed 14 kills and junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) chipped in 10 kills.
Sophomore Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) poured in a career-high 30 assists, followed by junior Aliani Adelis (Laveen, AZ) with a career-high 26 assists. Defensively, Murphy and senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) both collected 26 digs each while Masnica hauled in 12 and Simpson aided 10.
After losing the first set 25-22, the Lady Bears bounced back with a 25-17 win in the second but battled with the Bobcats in the third before coming out on top with a 29-27 edge. The Lady Bears would have full control in the fourth set when Shaw embellished on a 9-0 run to lead 22-14, a lead they would not relent to lock the 25-19 win.
For the contest, Johnson-McCoy paced Shaw with a season-best 12 kills and three digs while Moten, Klink and Simpson all contributed nine kills apiece. Masnica dished out 26 assists and five digs while Murphy hauled in a team-best 14 digs.
Shaw will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at St. Andrews for a non-conference match. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
