ATHENS, W Va. – The Shaw University women's volleyball suffered two setbacks against two quality opponents on day two of the Concord Classic Tournament. The Lady Bears dropped a 3-0 decision to West Virginia Tech (8-1) before falling short 3-1 to Ohio Valley (1-4) in the day's nightcap.
The Lady Bears (4-2) were led by junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) who combined for 21 total kills and 16 total digs in the two contests. Murphy was the only player for Shaw to chart double figures in kills offensively during both games while junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) added a total of 29 assists.
Defensively, senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) combined for 19 digs, including 11 versus OVU.
In the opener, WVU Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-20 and 25-12 triumphs in the first two sets before the Lady Bears tried to avoid the sweep in the third set with a one-point lead down the stretch thanks to two kills from sophomore Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) but the WVU Tech made work of errors by Shaw that led to the 25-23 defeat.
Shaw looked to bounce back in the nightcap, after taking the first set 25-16 over OVU but again the Lady Bears fell behind, giving up the second frame 25-19. Ultimately, Shaw would be edged by OVU in the next two sets to conclude the day.
The Lady Bears will look to regroup on Saturday when they take on host Concord (1-4) at 11 a.m. and West Virginia Wesleyan (1-4) at 1 p.m. Live stats and video for both contests will be available online.
