VOLLEYBALL TO PLAY TWICE AT UNC PEMBROKE TRI-MATCH

RALEIGH, N.C. – Coming off a 3-0 sweep of Claflin University for their season opener on Friday, Sept. 1, the Shaw University women's volleyball team will travel to Pemboke, N.C. for a pair of games Tuesday evening at the UNC Pembroke Tri-Match. The Lady Bears will challenge the Valkyries of Converse in a 5 p.m. match before taking the court against the Braves at 7 p.m. in the nightcap.

 

Both matches will be played inside the English E. Jones Center. Live stats and video will be available on www.shawbears.com.

 

The Lady Bears were led by junior's Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) and Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) whom both posted nine kills each. Klink tallied three blocks while Wattley accounted for one. Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) handed out a match-high 19 assists while senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) dug 10 balls in the win.

 

Scouting Converse:

The Valkyries enter Tuesday's contest with a 1-3 record overall after participating in the Elizabeth City State Tournament last weekend. Converse dropped two matches by the score of 3-0 to Alaska-Fairbanks and Kutztown.

 

Kenzie Schmatlz combined for 18 total kills to lead the team over the weekend while Jordan Mrkvicka accounted for 26 assists and Sydney Allen contributed 28 digs.

 

The last time Shaw and Converse met was during the 2016 season where the Lady Bears swept the Valkyries, 3-0 on Sept. 27.

 

Scouting UNC Pembroke:

The Braves welcome the Lady Bears to Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court with a 0-4 record, following their participation in the Newberry College Invitational last weekend. UNCP fell to Newberry, Southern Wesleyan, Coker and North Greenville all by the score of 3-0.

 

Several Braves led the efforts offensively as Bailee Jones was the team's leader in assists, totaling 66 assists for the weekend.

 

Last season, Shaw and UNCP met once where the Lady Bears were defeated by the Braves, 3-0 on Nov. 3.

 

Next Up for Shaw:

The Lady Bears will continue their road skid when they head to Athens, WV for the Concord Tournament that will feature Salem International, West Virginia Tech, Ohio Valley and host Concord on Sept. 7-9.
