RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's volleyball team will open its 2017 season with a home match versus Claflin University on Friday, Sept. 1 in the historical C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
First serve is slated for 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public, fans are asked to pack the gym as the Lady Bears have tagged Friday's contest as "Family Night".
DiShondra Goree will start her fourth season as head coach of the Lady Bears program and will be looking to continue her winning plateau this season. The Lady Bears are coming off a conference and division championship, a 22-8 year (15-1 CIAA) and return all of their starters from last season, including 2017 All-Preseason honorees, junior outside hitter Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI), junior setter Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR), junior right side hitter Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) and sophomore outside hitter Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX).
Shaw returns 11 players from last year's squad and has added five newcomers.
Claflin heads to Spaulding after compiling a 19-8 record, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) division title with a 14-3 conference record and tournament runner-up finish a season ago. The Lady Panthers are spear-headed by Jordan Wallace whom was named the SIAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and Preseason First Team.
CU has four key returners from last season and add three newcomers.
