RALEIGH, N.C. –The Shaw University women's tennis team is set to kick off its 2020 campaign Monday, Feb. 10 at N.C. Wesleyan University in Rocky Mount, N.C. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. from the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
Today's match will be the season opener for both the Lady Bears and the Battling Bishops.
Shaw is coming off a 17-9 overall record in 2019 and a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship for the third straight season. Most recently, the Lady Bears were picked to finish second in the CIAA Preseason Poll rankings, highlighted by three players on the Preseason Team in sophomore Kundai Manyonga (Harare, Zimbabwe) and seniors Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) and Siria Dibe (Tucumon, Argentia). Manyonga was named the 2019 CIAA Rookie of the Year.
As for N.C. Wesleyan, the Battling Bishops are coming off a 16-5 overall record in 2019 as a member of the NCAA Division III USA South Conference. NCW is the defending the USA Champions and made it to the second round of the NCAA DIII Championships before falling to Emory.
Shaw and N.C. Wesleyan met in 2019, the Lady Bears suffered a 9-0 loss to the Battling Bishops on Feb. 7 in Rocky Mount, N.C.
