CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The defending Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Champions, Shaw University women's tennis team was predicted to finish second in the 2020 CIAA Preseason Poll announced by the league office Thursday. The Preseason Order of Prediction along with the Preseason teams were voted on by the CIAA Tennis Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association, as well as the predicted order of finish as selected by the head coaches.
Johnson C. Smith was picked to win the conference title with four selections on the Preseason Team.
Sophomore Kundai Manyonga (Harare, Zimbabwe) and seniors Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) and Siria Dibe (Tucumon, Argentia) highlighted the 2020 Preseason Team. Last season, Manyonga finished her freshman campaign with a 10-1 record against CIAA opponents, 17-6 overall, while playing the no. 3/4 position in singles while finishing 7-0 in the conference and 10-3 overall in doubles on her way to being named CIAA Rookie of the Year.
The Lady Bears captured its third straight CIAA title and ninth Southern Division title a season ago. Shaw concluded 2019, 17-9 overall and 11-1 against conference opponents.
The 2020 campaign for the Lady Bears will begin on Feb. 10 at N.C. Wesleyan. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
