BOWIE, Md. – The No. 1 seed Shaw University women's tennis team (16-9) powered to a 4-0 win over No. 4 seed Winston-Salem State University (12-7) on Friday afternoon in the semifinal match of the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship on the campus of Bowie State University at the BSU Tennis Courts.
Under the leadership of head coach Sunday Enitan, the Lady Bears advance to its 12th-consecutive CIAA Women's Tennis Championship, will face either No. 2 Johnson C. Smith or No. 3 seed Virginia State on Saturday, May 4 at 12 noon. Should inclement weather present threat, the championship match will be held at the Fairland Sports and Aquatics Complex located on 13950 Old Gunpowder Road, Laurel, MD 20707.
Shaw made quick work of its division foe rival, as the freshman duo of Kundai Manyonga (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Eva Ostermeier (Munich, Germany) picked up a 6-0 win at the No. 3 doubles while veteran tandem senior Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) and junior Siria Dibe (Tucumon, Argentina) registered a 6-1 win at the No. 1 doubles to provide Shaw with a 1-0 win heading into singles competition.
Junior Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 singles while Mantecon scooped up a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position. Senior Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) would give the Lady Bears the 4-0 win after defeating her opponent 6-4 and 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.
Shaw has won the last two CIAA championships.
