BOWIE, Md. – The defending Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champions, Shaw University will begin its quest for a three-peat Thursday (May 2) when the No. 1 seeded Lady Bears take on No. 8 seed Bowie State University in the opening round of the CIAA Women's Tennis Championship Tournament on the campus of Bowie State.
Admission is free and open to the public.
First serve is slated for 10 a.m. at the BSU Tennis Courts. The winner of the opening match will face the winner of No. 4 seed Winston-Salem State (11-6) and No. 5 seed Fayetteville State (6-9) at 10 a.m. Friday (May 3).
The Lady Bears (14-9) enter the tournament riding a two match win-streak, Shaw has not competed since Apr. 23 when the Lady Bears earned a 5-2 win at Johnson C. Smith for its 11th-straight Southern Division title and 11-1 record against CIAA opponents this season.
BSU (4-9) made the CIAA Tournament with a 2-9 mark against conference opponents this season. The Bulldogs finished fourth place in the Northern Division with a 1-5 record.
Shaw owns the all-time series against BSU, winning the last 14 meetings including its most recent decision (8-1) back on Mar. 8 during the CIAA round-up in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Since the tournament has been moved to Bowie, Md., Shaw has won the last two CIAA championships.
