RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's tennis team looks to defend its conference title this week at the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship, hosted by Bowie State University. The three-day, eight-team tournament will take place May 2-4 on the campus of BSU.
The match format will consist of three doubles followed by six singles (3-6 format). The top eight teams from the Northern and Southern division qualified based on their regular season overall conference record. The top-seed Lady Bears (14-9, 11-1) are on the hunt for its third straight title and take on host and No.8 seed Bowie State Bulldogs (2-9, 1-9) while No. 2 seed Johnson C. Smith (12-10, 8-2) will face off against No. 7 Virginia Union University (3-8, 3-7). The No. 3 Virginia State (9-5, 6-0) will line up against No. 6 Elizabeth City State University (3-7, 3-6), while No 4. Winston-Salem State (11-6, 8-3) will look to top No. 5 Fayetteville State University (6-9, 3-5). Opening round games will begin at 10:30 a.m. (ET). The tournament is free and open to the public.
Shaw won last year's championship with a 5-0 win over Johnson C. Smith – a team that has built a little bit of history with the Lady Bears, as the Golden Bulls were the only conference opponent to beat SU earlier during the season, which snapped a 27-match win-streak for Shaw against CIAA opponents. Nevertheless, the Lady Bears have won nine of the CIAA's 17 championships all under the leadership of head coach Sunday Enitan including the last two titles (2017 and 2018).
