RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's tennis team saw a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) win-streak of 27-straight matches dating back to 2017 snapped Wednesday afternoon as the Lady Bears fell short to the visiting Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls at Lions Park.
The loss dips the Lady Bears to 9-4 overall, snapping a seven-match win-streak. Shaw now stands 7-1 in league action while JCSU improves to 8-6 overall and 6-0 in the CIAA.
Down a player, the Lady Bears were at a disadvantage as the No. 1 doubles duo of senior Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) and junior Sire Dibe (Tucumon, Argentina) won 6-0 but the JCSU took the No. 2 and 3 doubles, after Shaw had no player to assist senior Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) at the No. 3 doubles. The Golden Bulls took a one-point lead heading into singles.
Despite a 2-1 deficit, Mantecon claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 2 position and freshman Evea Ostermeier (Munich, Germany ) was a victor at the No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-0) but JCSU earned victories in the No. 1, 3 and 4 singles to come away with the match win.
The Lady Bears will look to bounce back Thursday (Mar. 28) when Livingstone comes into town for a conference match at 1 p.m. at Lions Park.
