RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University women's tennis swept the visiting Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos, 7-0 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division match Monday afternoon at Lions Park. The win pushed Shaw to 8-3 overall and 6-0 in the CIAA.
Shaw took control of the match with doubles action. A Lady Bear tandem of senior Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) and junior Siria Dibe (Tucumon, Argentina), competing at the No. 1 doubles opened play with a 6-0 victory while a duo of junior Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) and senior Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) earned a 6-1 win before freshman teammates Kundai Monyanga (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Eva Ostermeier (Munich, Germany) sealed the Lady Bears one-point lead heading into singles with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 doubles.
The momentum carried over into singles play as the Lady Bears cruised to victories in singles No. 1-6, including 6-0, 6-0 wins from Fekete and Ostermeier, respectively.
The loss dips Fayetteville State to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA.
Shaw will take a few days off before preparing for a home contest with division foe Johnson C. Smith on Mar. 27 at Lions Park. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
